The basis of resistance is awareness. If people can find ways of becoming aware of the assumptions about themselves and one another that their culture’s ideology may have manipulated them into taking for granted, then they can think clearly about those assumptions. They can decide whether it seems sensible to go on believing in the truth the ideologies assert, and whether the ideologies are obvious at all.
